The site originally hosted the Royal Oak, a frequent gathering spot for historical figures, including the eccentric 19th-century aristocrat Lady Hester Stanhope.
The current structure was built in the early-to-mid 19th century and it was erected to be the tallest building in town. Legend has it that the mason in charge, David Griffiths, celebrated its completion by standing on his head atop the highest chimney.
The hotel features a grand three-story, five-bay front constructed with local gray stone, red brick chimneys, and an impressive central arched doorway.
The Lion was forced to shut its doors in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and sat empty for over five years, enduring water damage and being left in a state of disrepair.
After a change in ownership and extensive repairs, the iconic property has officially roared back to life, reopening its doors for a cocktail bar service, room bookings, and community events.
